Best Tools For Covid-19

There are three devices that I highly recommend having on hand during this pandemic:  A nebulizer, a pulse oximeter and an oxygen generator. These are especially important for people who are older and have underlying health concerns.

We know from recent studies that SARS CoV-2 induced pneumonia initially causes a form of oxygen deprivation called “silent hypoxia” – “silent” because of its insidious, difficult-to-detect nature. ER doctors are reporting that patients without respiratory complaints had Covid-19 induced pneumonia.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs in which the air sacs fill with fluid or pus. Normally, patients develop chest discomfort, pain with breathing and often feel a sense of suffocating and frequently run a fever. However, when SARS CoV-2 pneumonia first strikes, patients often don’t feel short of breath, even as their oxygen levels fall. And by the time they do, their oxygen levels are extremely low and they have moderate-to-severe pneumonia (as seen on chest X-rays). SARS CoV-2 pneumonia patients often have oxygen saturations as low as 50 percent.

The Italians published new research shedding light on how the hypoxemia might develop. They found increased numbers of megakaryocytes in the lung capillaries, which are bone marrow cells responsible for making the platelets that are needed to form blood clots. 33 out of 38 patients had blood clots in the lung arteries. They suggested that the blood clots interfere with the delivery of oxygen to the blood and explain the hypoxemia of severe COVID-19 cases.

According to a story in The Washington Post, autopsies are showing that many people who died from the COVID-19 virus have hundreds of micro-clots present in their lungs at the time they die. The autopsies didn’t show pneumonia as was expected, but lung damage from blood clots. Damage was also seen in the kidneys, liver, heart, intestines and brain.

Pulse Oximeter & Oxygen Generator:

If we can recognize silent hypoxia early enough, it can be treated with oxygen therapy (through nasal tubes, a face mask, or a tube placed in the windpipe). Numerous doctor’s who are treating COVID-19 patients, are suggesting the use of oxygen is more effective, than using ventilators, at least initially.

In many COVID-19 cases, the virus silently causes injury to air sacs in the lungs. “The coronavirus affects the air sacs and causes pneumonia, which leads to impairment in the diffusion of oxygen through its membrane,” says Dr. Patel. “Initially the lungs remain compliant and can expel carbon dioxide, so people cannot feel any sensation of being breathless.”

Dr. Richard Levitan, believes that an oxygen-monitoring device called a pulse oximeter can help to detect low oxygen levels and alert people to seek early medical care. “Widespread pulse oximetry screening for COVID pneumonia—whether people check themselves on home devices or go to clinics or doctors’ offices—could provide an early warning system for the kinds of breathing problems associated with COVID pneumonia,” he wrote.

“All persons with cough, fatigue, and fevers should also have pulse oximeter monitoring even if they have not had virus testing, or even if their swab test was negative, because those tests are only about 70% accurate,” wrote Dr. Levitan. “A vast majority of Americans who have been exposed to the virus don’t know it.”

A pulse oximeter can be purchased online and at most drug stores. They are relatively inexpensive and fairly accurate if used correctly. This simple device could help single out those individuals who are in need emergency care.

To use the pulse oximeter, simply place your finger inside the device, turn it on and wait.  After a few seconds your oxygen saturation levels will be displayed.  An alarm will sound if levels are too low. Values under 60 mm Hg usually indicate the need for supplemental oxygen. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low.

If oxygen levels are low, an at home oxygen generator may be used to help restore normal oxygen saturation levels.  Talk to your doctor before using an oxygen generator or compressor. You will need a prescription to make sure you have the right oxygen flow and level for your needs. Carefully follow the instructions on your oxygen generator and read these 11 Critical Safety Precautions For Oxygen Therapy.

The Nebulizer

A nebulizer turns liquid medicine into a mist that can be inhaled directly into the lungs where it is needed to help treat a respiratory infection or asthma. During a respiratory infection, this mist is easy to inhale and works  even if you can’t take deep breaths.

Dr. Brownstein, Functional and Holistic MD and owner of The Center for Holistic Medicine is recommending protocols for Covid-19 that are extremely effective and can be followed at home using a nebulizer. Applying these protocols, patients have been successfully treating their symptoms at home, saving them from having to go to the emergency room.

It is best to use a nebulizer in conjunction with your doctor’s advice and supervision.

Quote from Dr Brownstien: “I have many patients nebulize both hydrogen peroxide and iodine over the years.  I have happily prescribed these therapies because they work and are safe when done appropriately.”

These Medications can be used in a nebulizer

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been used effectively to treat COVID-19. Health experts said the compound could help prevent virus from spreading across the body and from causing damage. Hydrogen peroxide can be found both in stores and the human body. The immune system uses the compound to boost the natural functions of cells and prevent viral infection. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, H2O2 may help fight the coronavirus, according to Dr. Thomas Levy. He said people can utilize hydrogen peroxide using its aerosolized form in a standard nebulizer. A recent study, published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, shows that even just 0.5 percent hydrogen peroxide could kill human coronaviruses, such as those that caused SARS and MERS. The findings backed a 2009 research that found inhaling vaporized hydrogen peroxide could lead to 99 percent inactivation of virus activities.

Instructions for using hydrogen peroxide and iodine in a nebulizer:

  1. Mix 3 ml of sterile saline with 3ml of food grade-diluted hydrogen peroxide (food grade HP 35% must be diluted to 3% – To make 3% H202, mix one ounce of 35% food grade H2O2 to 11 ounces of distilled water (preferably) or filtered water).
  2. Draw off 3cc of the mixture and place it in a nebulizer and breathe the solution in.
  3. You can also add a drop or two of 5% Lugol’s iodine to the mixture.
  4. Nebulize 3-5 times per day if sick.
  5. You may dilute the nebulizing solution or nebulize less frequently if needed. Study, Study
  • You can make your own saline solution with 1 tsp of Celtic salt in a cup of filtered, sterile water. Let it sit and then skim off the top. To the nebulizer add 3cc/ml of saline mixed w/ 3cc/ml of hydrogen peroxide.

NOTE: 35% Hydrogen Peroxide is highly concentrated and extremely strong. Keep out of the reach of children. If it is spilled on the skin, wash immediately in cold water. Do not allow it touch the eyes. If this happens, wash and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Store 35% H202 in the refrigerator or freezer. Out of refrigeration, it will lose strength (potency) at the rate of approximately one percent a month.

  1. Budesonide (asthma medication): Nebulize 2x daily according to Dr. Richard Bartlett, a medical doctor who has had a 100% recovery rate for his covid-19 patients using this therapy, even those who are older with serious underlying conditions.
  2. Iodine: Add a drop or two of Lugol’s 5% solution to 3 cc/ml of normal saline (0.9% saline).  Sterile saline can be purchased at a pharmacy.  If someone has Lugol’s 2% solution, they can use 2-4 drops in 3cc of sterile saline solution. Iodine offers a serious and potent replacement for many of the antibiotics prescribed. It can be used safely with children. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.
  3. Colloidal silver: Due to colloidal silvers’s antiviral and antibacterial properties, one of the most common uses is to nebulize it as a form of treatment for bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory infections. (Argentyn 23 is an excellent product – not all colloidal silver products are safe and effective) – For most respiratory infections, nebulize one – two teaspoons, 2-3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. Initially, nebulizing colloidal silver may cause coughing and phlegm before treatment helps lungs feel better. Treatment should be limited to no more than 30 days or as needed temporarily.
  4. Molecular Hydrogen Water: Molecular Hydrogen has been observed to be protective against damage to numerous organs including the brain, pancreas, heart, liver, eyes, and lungs. This is believed to be because of hydrogen’s anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and oxidative stress fighting effects. Add 1 tablespoon to the nebulizer & dispense 3-4 times daily. Also, drinking 16 or more ounces a day of molecular hydrogen water is recommended.

How to use a nebulizer:

  1. Check to make sure all the pieces are clean.
  2. Wash your hands before prepping the medication.
  3. If your medication is premixed, place it in the container. If you need to mix it, measure the correct amount, and then place it in the container.
  4. Connect the tube to the compressor and the liquid container.
  5. Attach the mouthpiece or mask.
  6. Turn on the switch and check to see that the nebulizer is misting.
  7. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your mouth around it or put the mask securely over your nose and mouth, leaving no gaps.
  8. Slowly breath in and out until the medicine is gone. This may take five to 15 minutes.
  9. Keep the liquid container upright throughout the treatment.

Tools For Healing

During the past 10 years that I have been immersed in the health and wellness industry, I’ve collected some very powerful tools for healing.  I use these devices personally and with clients to optimize health. These gadgets are extremely effective at improving lifestyle outcomes. Many of these tools I use every day. I have found them to be incredibly empowering and having them on hand has improved my family’s health and prevented many a doctor’s visit.

In sharing these, I hope to inspire you to take full control of your health by incorporating the tools that best suite your individual needs. Using these devices, along with proper nutrition, exercise and sleep, will improve your wellness and prevent many of the chronic diseases that plague our modern world.

Over the next few weeks I will be sending out a weekly post that highlights a specific tool that I use and recommend for optimizing wellness.

These tools can be used daily to supercharge your health

These tools are excellent for acute or chronic issues and can be an important addition to a therapeutic protocol:

These are helpful diagnostic devices:

First Line Therapy

Better Lifestyle, Better Life, Take Back your Health!

What is First Line Therapy? First Line Therapy is a “therapeutic lifestyle program.” Which means that this program will help you live your life in a way that improves your health. A “therapeutic lifestyle” means making choices every day that will enhance your health and help prevent disease, enabling you to achieve a full, healthy life.

First Line Therapy is based on extensive research demonstrating that many of the chronic diseases associated with aging are largely caused by lifestyle choices.

A therapeutic lifestyle program is now recommended as the “firstline therapy” for individuals with many of the conditions listed above as well as those with other health problems such as:

  • Stress related disorders
  • PMS
  • Other hormone related symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • PCOS
  • Menopause
  • Conditions related to overweight/obesity including high blood pressure, Cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Learn healthy eating habits, sensible exercises, develop lifestyle changes. You will discover increased energy, clearer thinking, deeper and better sleep and decreased stress. You will also feel an amazing powerhouse of energy within your body that’s just waiting to be released. You will be able to develop a tremendous amount of self-discipline, personal empowerment and how to think for success. Incorporate use of nutritious supplements to enhance program and speed time to achieve your goals.

First Line Therapy is not just a weight loss program

Most programs are focused on weight while FLT is best used as a first line treatment for common, chronic health problems (e.g. high cholesterol, insulin resistance, unhealthy body composition)

The First Line Therapy eating plan is different

Most programs are focuses on low fat diets while the FLT emphasizes the importance of a low-glycemic eating plan that is consistent with current research.

First Line Therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in human clinical studies

Most programs lack clinical evidence of effectiveness.

Getting Started-A Matter of Fat

In order to measure your progress, you first need to know your current health status.  A Variety of health assessments may be performed. Excess body fat can greatly increase your health risks.  But a higher ratio of muscle increases your metabolism and is associated with a lower incidence of illess.  Imporving your muscle-to-fat ratio is perhaps the most powerful tool in controlling the aging process and restoring vitality.  And that’s what First Line Therapy is all about!

Your Personal First Line Therapy Program Offers:

  • Initial and follow-up testing
  • Practitioner consultations
  • Solutions for staying active
  • Simple eating guidelines
  • Progress tracking
  • Lifestyle counseling
  • Nutritional product recommendations

Optimizing Health is Self-Immunization And It’s Our Best Protection Against Covid-19!

“A significant percentage of young people may be at increased risk because Americans have such a high baseline rate of pre-existing diseases such as diabetes”. -By Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent

Unfortunately only 12% of Americans are considered to be metabolically healthy. Being metabolically healthy means having optimal levels of five factors: blood glucose, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure and waist circumference, without the need for medications. Source. These are lifestyle diseases that can be reversed with good nutrition and therapeutic lifestyle interventions.

Being metabolically healthy is very important for optimizing immune function. Being healthy is our most effective shield against Covid-19! We are increasing seeing people of all ages being admitted to hospitals and ICUs in America primarily because of poor metabolic health which is putting a huge strain on our healthcare system and placing our nation at greater risk for higher hospitalizations and mortality rates during this pandemic.

According to data from the CDC (see the graph below), just 7% of the population who have already tested positive for Covid-19 and are healthy (have no underlying health conditions) have required hospitalization and only 2% of those with no underlying health conditions have been admitted to an ICU. In other words, it’s unusual for healthy people to be hospitalized and extremely rare for healthy people to be admitted to an ICU or require treatment with a ventilator.

We are also learning that only a small percentage of people who are put on ventilators survive Covid-19.  So if our one hope for saving lives, ventilators, only has a small success rate, we are in trouble! Because it’s so rare for healthy people to need a ventilator we should be all the more engaged in getting healthy and encouraging our loved ones to do the same.  Source

Immunologists tell us there is no virus stronger than a healthy human! So cultivate your immune system which is the defense system your body deploys to destroy this pathogen. A powerful, balanced immune system will take Covid-19 out. Our strategy must be to improve our health! But even if you haven’t been taking good care of yourself it’s not too late to start!

Inflammatory foods, environmental toxins and stress levels are big players in inflammation and disease. Emotional stress and nutritional toxicity weaken our immune system. The less stressed you are and the more nutrient dense your diet is, the better your chances are. We know that vitamins including A, D and C along with minerals like potassium, zinc, selenium and magnesium are critical for a healthy immune response to infections. Most Americans are depleted in many of these critical nutrients.

So while it’s important to carefully avoid exposure to Covid-19, especially if your body is inflamed, you can’t hide from this virus forever. Work hard to get healthy now! A virus is a predator and it’s looking for prey. Covid-19 predicates on inflammatory tissue (sick, inflamed, stressed, exhausted, dehydrated, depleted people). So work to keep your inflammation levels low and do everything you can to optimize your health!

For years we Americans have outsourced our health to big Pharma, relying on drugs to maintain disease states rather than doing the hard work of getting healthy by making better lifestyle choices. We live in a high stress, toxic food culture. This pandemic is a wake up call to take back our health!!

Take this short test to rate your inflammation levels.

Read this list of important lifestyle strategies that will improve your health. Then set some goals for improvement.

So here’s a few suggestions on how to improve your health starting tomorrow morning:

During the 1st hour of the day charge your body up by drinking a large glass of filtered water with a squeeze of lemon. Then take time to pray/meditate, get some exercise and some sunshine, take 500-1000 mg of vitamin C, 25 mg of zinc and when you’re ready to eat make sure it’s a nutrient dense breakfast! Skip the cereal, bread, bagels, pop tarts, donuts, pop tarts and cinnamon rolls and instead, eat a super food protein shake with fruit & leafy greens or cook some eggs and serve with vegetables and fruit. It’s also a great idea to take a high quality multi vitamin/mineral.

Reducing stress, exercising, staying hydrated and eating 8-10 servings of vegetables a day as part of a mediterranean diet will drastically improve overall health and renew a damaged immune system.

Remember to get sunshine early in the day to boost night time melatonin levels. And get plenty of sleep at night. And don’t forget to stay connected with the people you love especially during quarantine.

If you have any chronic health conditions and would like to work towards getting healthy to reverse these conditions check out First Line Therapy. This is the program that I use to help my clients get well and optimize their health for life.

So here’s to your health! Let’s do our part to get healthy in order to flatten the Covid-19 curve. More healthy people equals less stress on the health care system and our economy!

Improving Immunity: A Holistic Approach to Covid-19

Kim Martindale is a Holistic Health Practitioner.  She is not a medical doctor. This site is for informational and educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or treat any disease.

As cases grow, the likelihood of each one of us contracting COVID-19 grows with it. We know that people who have underlying health issues are at higher risk for severity of symptoms and mortality from Covid-19. Being healthy is absolutely critical to surviving and thriving during a pandemic. For this reason I highly recommend that each one of us do our very best to take good care of our health during this time while simultaneously having great compassion for those around us.

We know there are drivers for the underlying health conditions that can and should be addressed to reduce the overall risk of complications and mortality from Covid-19. These included things like exposure to 5G electro smog, chemical toxicity from pesticides/herbicides/glyphosate, tooth decay/gum disease, chronic stress, chemical/metal load, poor nutrition and deficiencies in Vitamin D, potassium and melatonin.

What to do if you or a loved one is hospitalized with Covid-19: Unfortunately, when people get sick enough with Covid-19 to need hospitalization they enter a system where they may be alone. In many hospitals family members are not permitted to be present with an adult patient. Without an advocate, patients are at the mercy of the system and are often too sick or not informed enough to know how to advocate for themselves. So if you are in this situation, here are some tips from a nurse practitioner inside the current system:

  1. Request records and transcripts immediately
  2. If there is a medication that you want your loved ones to be given, report it as an at home medication and demand that it be continued
  3. Do not give consent for intubation, instead, demand non-invasive or less invasive ventilation. Only extremely severe cases require ventilation and the outcomes are very poor.

Because new information about Covid-19 is emerging daily from this pandemic, I will be updating my recommendations from time to time. Please check back to stay current with your prevention and mitigation strategies.

On April 22, Chris Masterjohn reported on the first large series of post-mortem analyses that suggested blood clots within the small arteries of the lungs may be at the root of the COVID-19 hypoxemia (low blood oxygen). Since then, New York City doctors have reported strokes occurring in COVID-19 patients under the age of 50, including one as young as 33. This is consistent with the disease causing blood clots, which are the major cause of stroke in Western countries.

At this time we are learning of new and effective treatments for Covid-19 but there is still no cure for this virus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure to the virus and support your immune system.

There are three stages that I hope you’ll be prepared for in this pandemic.

  1. Prevention: Top strategies to keep your immune system strong and prevent respiratory infections.

Avoid taking these supplements and medications that suppress the immune system unless absolutely necessary:

  1. antimicrobials (unless you’re treating an acute infection)
  2. anti-histamines
  3. acid lowering drugs
  4. ACE inhibitors
  5. Ibuprofen or Advil

*Tylenol is a safer choice but it lowers glutathione levels and may damage the liver. Curcumin and SPMs are an even better choice for pain relief and these supplements also help modulate the immune system.

  • Maintain healthy micronutrient status: Consider a good multivitamin/multimineral:
    • Vitamin A/Retinol not beta carotene form (3000-10,000 IUs daily) – older people and those with vision, respiratory and skin issues may need the higher dose. Always take vitamin D supplements along with vitamin A.
    • Vitamin C (1000-2000 mg daily) – Liposomal and powder forms are best. Increase dose with symptoms.
    • Vitamin D3 taken with K2 (5000-10,000 IUs daily depending on levels and sun exposure). Most Americans are deficient in Vitamin D after being indoors all winter. Always take vitamin D with K2 to avoid increased risk of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis.
    • Potassium (100 mg)
    • Magnesium (300-500 mg daily)
    • Selenium (55-400 mcg daily)
    • Zinc (15-30 mg daily – do not exceed 70 mg).
    • Iodine (6.5 mg 2x daily)
    • Food sources and sunshine are very important and may be sufficient for healthy people. Try to get 15-60 min of sunshine daily.
  • Maintain Iron levels: Maintain a ferritin level of 100-150 μg/ml. Excessively high or low Iron levels make the body more susceptible to viral infections. If you are anemic, liver and blackstrap molasses are the best food sources of iron. If your iron levels are too high, donating blood is the best way to lower them. Source
  • Eat clean protein and vegetables daily while reducing grains and starches. This will help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and improve body composition (fat to muscle ratio).
  • Drink green tea and filtered water. 2-4 cups of green tea a day can help modulate the immune system. Having a good water filter can also save money on bottled water and help the environment. Study
  • Eat foods that support glutathione production: asparagus, avocado, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli, garlic, chives, cucumber, almonds, and walnuts. Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant.
  • Eat foods that support healthy immune function: garlicginger, turmeric, onions, fermented foods (kimchi, yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut), oregano, seaweed (iodine), Brazil nuts (selenium), Moringa, citrus fruit and peels (make tea from orange peels), mushrooms, bone broths and pomegranate
  • Elderberry syrup – 1 tsp daily away from food for prevention and 1 tsp, 2x daily if symptoms. Study, Study
  • Phosphatidylecholine –  for repair of damaged cell membranes – 2 a day with food. Study, Source
  • Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions would benefit from supplementing with S-Acetyl or Liposomal Glutathione during all three phases. Study, Study
  • Intermittent fasting also helps support immunity and also contributes to weight loss. Try to eat in an 8-10 hour window each day.
  • Hot/Cold therapy – Sauna alternating with an ice bath/cold shower This therapy strengthens immunity. Far Infrared saunas may activate innate immunity. Source

2. Acute Phase: 1-3 days – Time to up-regulate the immune system: Warning: individuals with high blood pressure and high A1C, should avoid herbal supplements that up-regulate the immune system like astragalus, echinacea and elderberry.  These people are at higher risk for cytokine storms!

  • Oral Zinc supplement 15-25 mg daily and zinc lozenges, up to 8 a day for sore throat (zinc and copper should be in a 15:1 ration)
  • Propolis: The spray is excellent for a sore throat. You can also steam inhale the liquid forms of propolis for a cough. Mix liquid propolis with hot water and steam. Cover your head with a towel and breath it in. I like the product Gaia Herbal Blend – Propolis, echinacea and goldenseal herbal tincture – spray and dose high and often.
  • N-acetylcysteine (NAC) – 1000 – 6000 mg depending on severity of symptoms
  • Vitamin C – 1000 grams 4-8x a day. Take every hour.
  • Vitamin D3 w/K2 – 50,000 IUs a day for 3 days only (always take with K2 (MK-7).
  • Quercetin – 1 gm 2x a day; phytosome 500 mg 2x a day. Study
  • Curcumin – 500-1,000 mg 2x a day (use absorption-enhanced curcumin.Study
  • S-boulardi (probiotic) – excellent for acute infections. Immunosuppressed individuals need to avoid novel probiotics, instead use known commensal bacteria (Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilus, S-boulardi and single strain probiotics).
  • Beta Glucans – Supplement with or eat plenty of mushrooms. Study
  • Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions may consider taking S-Acetyl or Liposomal Glutathione during all three phases. Study, Study
  • Ozone Therapy (IVs, Ozone Shots, Ozonated water) – Ozone gas has been proven to kill the SARS coronavirus and since the structure of the new 2019-nCoV coronavirus is almost identical to that of the SARS coronavirus, it is relatively safe to say that it will also work on the new coronavirus. Currently there is only one study being conducted in China at the Institute of Virology In Hubei with regards to ozone therapy. Progress of that study has shown that it works. Results will be published in the journal Virology. Warning: ozone gas should never be inhaled! Source, Source, Source, Source

A nebulizer can be a powerful tool for addressing a cough or shortness of breath : A nebulizer is a device that is very similar in design and purpose to an asthma inhaler, but is easier to use and slightly more relaxing. When operated, oxygen and air are blasted through the liquid medicine at high speeds and then inhaled by the individual. As the air passes through the liquid, it creates an aerosol that contains the medication needed for the lungs.

Hand Held Nebulizer
  1. Hydrogen Peroxide: Dr. Brownstein’s Recommendation – Use sterile, normal, saline(3ml) and food grade-diluted hydrogen peroxide (3ml) (food grade 35% diluted to 3%).  Draw off 3cc of the mixture and place it in a nebulizer and breathe the solution in. You can make your own saline solution with 1 tsp of Celtic salt in a cup of filtered, sterile water. Let it sit and then skim off the top. To the nebulizer add 3cc/ml of saline mixed w/ 3cc/ml of hydrogen peroxide. Nebulize 3-5 times per day if sick. You may dilute the nebulizing solution or nebulize less frequently if needed. Source, Source
  2. Iodine:  Dr. Brownstein’s Recommendation – Add a drop or two of Lugol’s 5% solution to 3 cc/ml of normal saline (0.9% saline).  Normal saline can be purchased at a pharmacy.  If someone has Lugol’s 2% solution, they can use 2-4 drops in 3cc of normal saline. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.: Study, Study, Source, Source
  3. Colloidal silver: Due to colloidal silvers’s antiviral and antibacterial properties, one of the most common uses is to nebulize it as a form of treatment for bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory infections. (Argentyn 23 is an excellent product – not all colloidal silver products are safe and effective) For most respiratory infections, nebulize one teaspoon, 2-3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. Initially, nebulizing colloidal silver may cause coughing and phlegm before treatment helps lungs feel better. Treatment should be limited to no more than 30 days or as needed temporarily. Source Colloidal silver can also be gargled, sprayed in the nostrils, used in a neti pot, used as eyedrops and taken orally.
  4. Molecular Hydrogen Water: Hydrogen has been observed to be protective against damage to numerous organs including the brain, pancreas, heart, liver, eyes, and lungs. This is believed to be because of hydrogen’s anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and oxidative stress fighting effects. Add 1 tablespoon to the nebulizer & dispense 3-4 times daily. Also, drinking 16 or more ounces a day of molecular hydrogen water is recommended. Study Published Studies, Study Molecular Hydrogen generators are available for purchase online. Hydrogen water generator with inhaler adaptor.
This Level Up molecular hydrogen water generator also includes an inhaler adaptor. There are many good brands on the market.
Products that can be used in a nebulizer. Many of these are available through Wellevate

3. Progression of Disease (cytokine storm stage): During this phase, strictly avoid taking supplements that up-regulate the immune system! Critically important studies emerging from China suggest that for many patients who die of Covid-19, it may be their own immune system, rather than the virus itself, that deals the fatal blow. This is called a cytokine storm. This is the time to take nutrients and medications that help to modulate the immune system and calm it down.

Elderly individuals tend to be deficient in glutathione which is critical for modulating the immune system and reducing oxidative stress which is the main cause of morbidity in those with community acquired pneumonia. Source. A persistent pro-oxidative state that is unregulated and uncontrolled can lead to impairment of the lungs, pneumonia and increased mortality rates. Too much Oxidative stress with sub optimal antioxidant defenses causes the body’s immune system to go into over drive and damage it’s own tissues. Glutathione is the body’s master anti-oxidant and it plays a key role in the control of this pro-inflammatory cytokine storm. Study

Other Lifestyle Recommendations to Improve Immune Health:

  1. Avoid all sources of refined sugar: To prevent becoming ill and to avoid having a poorly responding immune system, it is vitally important to eat a healthy diet free of all sources of refined sugar. Refined sugar has been shown to negatively alter the functioning of the white blood cells for hours after ingestion.
  2. Maintain optimal hydration: It is very important to drink water! Take your body weight in pounds, divide by two and the resultant number is the amount of water to drink per day in ounces. Dehydration ensures you will be much more likely to suffer serious problems from any infectious process.
  3. Eliminate Alcohol: Alcohol dehydrates and depletes the body of vitamins and minerals.
  4. Get plenty of sleep! In a recent study, scientists say they discovered that quality sleep can bolster the T cells in your body that fight off infection. Good sleep does this by enhancing the ability of T cells to adhere to and destroy cells infected by viruses and other pathogens.
  5. Maintain a healthy microbiome (healthy diversity of gut bacteria): Studies over the past 15 years have demonstrated that unique microbial communities reside in the gastrointestinal and the respiratory tract, which have both direct and indirect effects on the ability of the host to defend itself against viral infections. To build a healthy microbiome eat plenty of fermented foods and take probiotics to replenish after each round of antibiotics. Use a water filter to remove chlorine, fluoride and other medications and chemicals, including pesticides that are damaging to the microbiome and are frequently present in tap water. Eat a diet rich in fiber and low in processed foods and sugar to feed friendly, protective bacteria.
  6. Exercise daily and sit in a far infra red sauna if you have access to one.
  7. Spend time in nature and out in the sunshine to help reduce stress and improve mood and vitamin D levels.
  8. If you have a chronic condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity, consider addressing it with lifestyle medicine through a program like First Line Therapy. Many people have reversed chronic diseases through programs like this.
  9. Avoid exposure to toxins: Avoid using toxic products on your body that trigger inflammation in the tissue/cell membrane. Hair products, skin care, make-up, fragrances etc. Use non- toxic cleaning/laundry products and NO synthetic air fresheners, plug-ins, Febreeze etc

I’m sharing this advice from a Respiratory Therapist on how to treat Pneumonia at home during Covid-19:

1. Only high temperatures kill a virus, so let your fever run high. Tylenol, Advil. Motrin, Ibuprofen etc. will bring your fever down allowing the virus to live longer. They are saying that ibuprophen, advil etc will actually exacerbate the virus. Use common sense and don’t let fever go over 103 or 104 if you got the guts. If it gets higher than that take your tylenol, not ibuprophen or advil to keep it regulated. It helps to keep house warm and cover up with blankets so body does not have to work so hard to generate the heat. It usually takes about 3 days of this to break the fever.

2. The body is going to dehydrate with the elevated temperature so you must rehydrate yourself regulaly, whether you like it or not. Gatorade with real sugar, or pedialyte with real sugar for kids, works well. Why the sugar? Sugar will give your body back the energy it is using up to create the fever. The electrolytes and fluid you are losing will also be replenished by the Gatorade. If you don’t do this and end up in the hospital they will start an IV and give you D5W (sugar water) and Normal Saline to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is much cheaper, pain free, and comes in an assortment of flavors

3. You must keep your lungs moist. Best done by taking long steamy showers on a regular basis, if your wheezing or congested use a real minty toothpaste and brush your teeth while taking the steamy shower and deep breath through your mouth. This will provide some bronchial dialation and help loosen the phlegm. Force your self to cough into a wet wash cloth pressed firmly over your mouth and nose, which will cause greater pressure in your lungs forcing them to expand more and break loose more of the congestion.

4. Eat healthy and regularly. Gotta keep your strength up.

5. Once the fever breaks, start moving around to get the body back in shape and blood circulating.

6. Deep breath on a regular basis, even when it hurts. If you don’t it becomes easy to develope pneumonia. Pursed lip breathing really helps. That’s breathing in deep and slow then exhaling through tight lips as if your blowing out a candle, blow until you have completely emptied your lungs and you will be able to breath in an even deeper breath. This helps keep lungs expanded as well as increase your oxygen level.

7. Remember that every medication you take is merely relieving the symptoms, not making you well.

8. If you are still dying go to ER.

Optimal Health Consulting: Designing Personalized Wellness

Welcome! I am Kim Martindale.  I am pleased to offer my services as a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner.

I am passionate about helping you to regain and optimize your health by teaching you how to build a strong, healthy foundation and designing a personalized wellness plan to address the underlying root cause(s) of your symptoms.
 .
My goal is to to support the whole person by promoting healthy lifestyle changes through targeted nutritional support, nutraceuticals, exercise, and stress management to reduce your bio markers and risk factors of chronic disease.  I also incorporate healing therapies including but not limited to ozone, FIR sauna and light therapy when needed.
.
One area that I specialize in is building a healthy gut and microbiome. I use the 5R approach (Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Rebuild and Rebalance) to bring the gut back into balance.  Hippocrates said that ‘All disease begins in the gut” and we are discovering more and more how right he was. Every cell and organ in the body is effected when the gut is not healthy.
 .
Metabolic detoxification protocols are powerful for addressing the root cause of many chronic illnesses.  Supporting the body to detoxify chemicals, heavy metals and other toxins can help to clear brain fog,  relieve depression, and anxiety, reduce inflammation, prevent cancer and diabetes, and accelerate weight loss.  According to the CDC, the average American has upwards of 212 toxic chemicals in their blood and urine.  Never before have humans been exposed to so many toxins at such high levels.
 .
In my practice I implement powerful, physician grade detoxification protocols.
 .
Along with personalized coaching, and group classes, I also provide physician grade nutraceuticals and healing therapies, including far infrared sauna and infrared light therapy.
 .
As a certified NutriGenetic analyst, I use genetic data to personalize lifestyle programs based on each individual’s unique DNA to prevent disease and optimize health.

What people are saying about Optimal Health Consulting:

Rebecca came to see Kim in November 2016.  She had been previously diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) several years earlier.  At the time she came to Kim she was struggling with weight issues and had tried all the medications as suggested by the endocrinologist.  Unfortunately, those medications made her sick mentally and physically.  More doctors were recommended as were pharmaceuticals.  Nothing seemed to be working.  Her weight continued to rise; she became depressed, and the medications made her physically sick.  As her mom, I decided to stop all medications and pursue a natural approach.  We visited Kim in November, ran some tests, and began a clean protocol of eating.  As this process was so new and the holidays were looming I asked for a month to do research and get the necessary tools and recipes ready.  I began experimenting and by Christmas we had began eating healthier and gluten free.  In January we began the protocol as recommended by Kim.  Although difficult, we saw radical changes rather quickly.  Rebecca’s weight began to melt away even without exercise.  That was enough to keep her motivated.  We continued regular visits, adjusted supplements, and ran other tests.  Rebecca lost around 30 lbs. and went down 3 sizes in clothing.  Her sugar levels stabilized as well.  Even her emotional well-being changed, and she came out of her depression.  I can’t say enough good things about Kim.  She didn’t try to put a bandage on my daughter’s health; she tried to get to the root.  By healing her gut she experienced overall healing.  — Melissa
———————————————————————————
I am very happy to say I’m totally off Metformin and any other prescription drugs related to my PCOS, aside from the birth control. Even this summer with traveling quite a bit.  I had great results at my last checkup in September! My glucose and cholesterol has gone down to a normal range. As you may remember me telling you, doctors told me I would be on Metformin for the rest of my life. To see normal insulin levels every day and get off medication has by far been the greatest and most life changing part of this journey.
 .
As far as weight loss, I know now what works for my body, and it’s very much about me choosing to eat the right things. Thanks to your diet protocol, I was able to lose 20 pounds in the time we worked together. I am so grateful to have a better knowledge and understanding of what works for me. I’m still working on losing all the weight I’d like, but before working with you I thought it was impossible. Now I know that certainly isn’t true!
 .
Also, when I came to visit you I was struggling with being bloated, having a constant upset stomach, and suffering from debilitating headaches. Changing my diet has helped alleviate all of these symptoms for me!
Again, thank you for all your help!  — Alexandra

First Line Therapy Program Overview

One in 3 Americans have metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions that can lead to type 2 diabetes and heart disease, which can be preventable or reversible through a clinically proven lifestyle medicine program. If you have 3 of the 5 following markers, you are at risk: 1) elevated waist circumference, 2) elevated triglycerides, 3) reduced HDL “good” cholesterol, 4) elevated blood pressure, and 5) elevated fasting glucose.

Change Your Health with the FirstLine Therapy Metabolic Syndrome Program

The FirstLine Therapy Metabolic Syndrome Program is a professionally supervised, personalized lifestyle modification plan. Designed by healthcare professionals, this program has been shown remarkably successful in helping individuals like you return to a path of extended health.

This is not a weight reduction program — it’s a disease reduction program. While weight loss often occurs, it’s only secondary to the primary goal helping you achieve and maintain a healthy body composition ( lean-muscle-to-fat ratio ) to improve health, manage disease, feel better, and reduce your risk of more serious conditions.

FirstLine Therapy® is a Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) program that can enhance your health and prevent disease.

It can help you address a wide range of health conditions as well as other lifestyle related health concerns and symptoms. These include:

• Heart disease

• Poor memory or lack of mental clarity
• And many others

FirstLine Therapy is structured with professional supervision to help you:

  • Establish realistic, personalized goals to improve health
  • Monitor your progress and help you stay on track
  • Learn how to eat and shop for healthy, nutritious foods that manage (not increase) cravings
  • Exercise in a way that builds muscle and gets rid of unwanted fat
  • Relax and manage unhealthy stress
  • Feel better and do more!

First Line Therapy is A 12 week program offered at the Integrative Wellness & Research Center: http://www.integrativewellness.org. Contact us at 901-763-7006 or email kleech2000@gmail.com to make an appointment with Kimberly Martindale.

Scientific Evidence for FirstLine Therapy® and TLC

While weight loss plans routinely tout “scientific evidence” to back their claims, the fact is, any diet that results in a calorie deficit will produce weight loss. But FirstLine Therapy isn’t about just losing weight, it’s about making choices every day that will enhance your health and prevent disease, enabling you to achieve a full, healthy life.

A wealth of scientific evidence tells us that adopting habits that are healthy can delay the onset of illness in old age and extend years of good health. Here are the results of just some of the major studies affirming the advantages of FirstLine Therapy and the benefits of therapeutic lifestyle changes in general and the advantages of :

The Advantages of FirstLine Therapy

• In a recent study conducted by the Functional Medicine Research Center, the research arm of Metagenics, FirstLine Therapy was shown to improve important cardiovascular disease risk factors in patients with metabolic syndrome, more significantly than the same low-glycemic-load diet and exercise alone.1

• In a 12-week, 2-arm prospective clinical trial of postmenopausal women (53 subjects completing the trial), FirstLine Therapy was shown to effectively address 14 markers of cardiovascular health—significantly better than a leading American Heart Association dietary plan with exercise.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes

• A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology concluded that many patients with conventional risk factors for CHD can experience lowered risk without mediations within 12 weeks of starting a therapeutic lifestyle change program, refuting the notion that intensive lifestyle modification is not worth the effort.3

• In a similar study of 337 adults ranging in age from 43 to 81 years published by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, a lifestyle modification program was found to be an effective nutrition and physical activity intervention in the short term, and has the potential to notably decrease the risks associated with common chronic disease in the long term.4

• The PREMIER multi-center clinical trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute found that individuals with above-optimal blood pressure, including stage 1 hypertension, can apply multiple lifestyle changes that lower blood pressure and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.5

• A randomized, single-blind 3-year study of 180 patients with metabolic syndrome concluded that a Mediterranean-style diet ( emphasizing whole grains, fish, vegetables, and fruit) might be effective in reducing the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome and its associated cardiovascular disease risk.6

• A cohort study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society of 3,051 men age 60-79 years with no diabetes mellitus or diagnosis of CHD found that modification of lifestyle factors, even later in life, has considerable potential for primary prevention of metabolic syndrome.7

Kim’s Tips for Health and Wellness

I recently spoke to a group of ladies at my church about health and nutrition.   I passed out a handout with this information on it.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. ” (Genesis 1: 29)

Current Health Statistics

  • In 1970 1 in 10,000 had autism.   CDC – 1 in 50 has autism in 2013.
  • In 1970 4% of children were obese with rare cases of type 2 diabetes. In 2013 40% of children are obese and one in three children suffers from diabetes.  Diabetes cases among all age groups have increased more than 700 percent in the last 50 years.
  • Childhood asthma rates have increased by 200% since 1990.   8% of Americans have asthma today.
  • Only 1% of children were diagnosed with ADHD in 1970.  In  2013 11% of children are diagnosed with ADHD (that is one in 5).  There has been a 700% increase in psycho-stimulant use.
  • Food allergies are now among America’s most common medical concerns.  Today 3 in 100 people have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts, dairy, eggs or shellfish.
  • According to the American Cancer Society cancer rates have increased since 1901 from only 1 in 8,000 Americans to 1 in 3 today.  Brain cancer in children is up 40% in 20 years.

What is causing this explosion of disease in the past few decades?  We know our genes can’t change that fast.

1) Environmental Toxins  – 2,000 new chemicals are introduced into commerce annually in the U.S., at a rate of seven new chemicals a day.  85,000 chemicals are in use today.  Our government does not require safety testing on chemicals before they are released into the environment.  A modern baby is born with 200+ chemicals in his/her blood many of which are known to be carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.

2) Electromagnetic pollution is a global problem. EMFs are the radiation that surrounds all electrical appliances and devices, power lines, and home wiring and is emitted by communications devices, including cell phones and radio, TV, and WiFi transmitters.

Public health policy experts from the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and China, released a 650-page report citing more than 2,000 studies that detail the toxic effects of EMFs from all sources. Chronic exposure to even low-level radiation (like that from cell phones), the scientists concluded, can cause a variety of cancers, impair immunity, and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, heart disease, and many other ailments.

3) Toxic food is man made, processed food, which includes dangerous additives like high fructose corn syrup, MSG, nitrates/nitrites, artificial sweeteners, food dyes, chemical preservatives, trans and hydrogenated fats and GMOs.  Industry spends billions advertising fast food and junk food to our children. Food scientists have figured out how to engineer food to make it addictive to increase profits.

Genetically Modified foods include Soy, Cottonseed oil, Canola, Corn, Sugar Beets, Hawaiian papaya, Alfalfa, Zucchini and some Yellow Squash.  50 countries ban or significantly restrict GMOS.  Visit “The Institute for Responsible Technology”  for more information.

4) Chronic Stress:  Unlike everyday stressors, which can be managed with healthy stress management behaviors, untreated chronic stress can result in serious health conditions including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system. Research shows that stress can contribute to the development of major illnesses, such as heart disease, depression and obesity.

5) The destruction of microbial diversity – Almost all disease begins in the gut.  Microbial health and diversity is the key to a strong, healthy body and immune system.  Antibiotics, pesticides, chemicals, steroids, chemotherapy and Genetically modified food all contribute to the destruction of healthy bacteria in our gut.

How Do I build a healthy body through nutrition?   JUST EAT REAL FOOD!

Take baby steps.  Choose one or more items to focus on at a time.

1) Eat raw food to detoxify, alkalinize, energize, lose weight, improve digestion and live longer.   Living foods contain enzymes. Get raw food via juicing, smoothies, salads and dips. 50% or more of our diet should be raw.

Foods to buy organic (thin skinned fruits and vegetables) include Celery, Peaches, Strawberries, Apples, Blueberries, Nectarines, Bell peppers, Spinach, Kale, Cherries, Potatoes, Grapes, Cucumbers, Squash and Zucchini.

2) Eat healthy fats:  Your brain and your hormones need healthy fats!  Our brains are 80% fat.

  • Organic butter and ghee from pastured cows
  • Coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, walnut oil, flax seed oil, sesame oil
  • Avocados
  • Free range, organic eggs and pastured meat
  • Fatty fish and fish oil
  • Nuts

3) Choose nutrient dense carbohydrates.  Ditch the grains (with the exception of rice and quinoa in moderation) and eat complex carbs:  Vegetables, beans, sweet potatoes, and fruit.  Always combine carbs with healthy fats or protein.

* Avoid processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup.  Excess sugar feeds cancer cells, triggers weight gain, promotes premature aging, feeds pathogenic bacteria and yeast, creates hormonal imbalance and shrinks our brain. Sugar causes inflammation.

* Avoid grains, especially gluten – Gluten intolerance is linked over 100 illnesses. Research has shown that as many as 40% of all Americans may be gluten sensitive.  No human can properly digest gluten. Whole wheat bread has a higher glycemic index than a tablespoon of sugar or a Snickers Bar. Get tested or try an elimination diet.

4) Eat organic, pastured eggs and meat.  Factory farmed/feed lot animals have a very different nutritional profile than naturally raised animals.  Eat 4 servings of protein a day.

5) Eat traditional foods – Fermented foods contain billions of probiotics for building a healthy immune system (kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, Greek yogurt, fermented coconut water, kambucha, etc.), organ meats, bone broth, and meat on the bone.

6) Take Supplements – Probiotics, Digestive Enzymes, Omega 3 fatty acids (DHEA), Vitamin D3, & Magnesium and iodine (Dulse and kelp)

7) Drink pure, filtered water.  Tap water contains chlorine, fluoride and who knows what else.

8) Move your body – I recommend interval training, walking, yoga and rebounding.  Find something you love and do it!

9) Get 7-9 hours of sleep in a completely dark room.  EMFs can interfere with sleep so keep your phone on airport mode if it’s by your bed and turn your wifi off at night.

10) Reduce your stress, deal with negative emotions, practice gratitude and forgive those who have wronged you and don’t forget to forgive yourself.

11)  Get tested for food sensitivities, GI health, chemical and heavy metal load, hormones, adrenal health, lyme disease, etc… Visit  the Integrative Wellness Center.

12) Learn to cook – Cooking is a lost art in America.  Cooking can be fun, nourishing, and educational.  Cooking can bring families and communities together. For some kids it’s their only interaction with the natural world.

13) Don’t let yourself become isolated.  Find a community.  Grow in your faith and use your gifts and resources to bless others.
