The Dangers of Pesticides to Humans

Source: http://www.purezing.com/living/toxins/living_toxins_dangerouspesticides.html

Pesticides accumulate in the fat deposits in the body where they remain and cause damage. Infants and young children consuming breast milk ingest pesticides. Pregnant women can pass pesticides on to their fetus. Women who eat fruits and vegetables that have been sprayed with pesticides, pass the pesticides on to their nursing children. Women who eat meat that has been injected with growth hormones and antibiotics, pass these chemicals on to their nursing children. Children eating foods that have been treated with hormones, antibiotics or pesticides, have them in their bodies.

‘A study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and published in the September 2005 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives shows eating organic foods provides children with “dramatic and immediate” protection from exposure to two organophosphate pesticides that have been linked to harmful neurological effects in humans.

The pesticides—malathion and chlorpyrifos—while restricted or banned for home use, are widely used on a variety of crops, and according to the annual survey by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pesticide Data Program, residues of these organophosphate pesticides are still routinely detected in food items commonly consumed by young children.

Over a fifteen-day period, Dr. Chensheng “Alex” Lu and his colleagues from Emory University, the University of Washington, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention measured exposure to malathion and chlorpyrifos in 23 elementary students in the Seattle area by testing their urine.

The participants, aged 3-11-years-old, were first monitored for three days on their conventional diets before the researchers substituted most of the children’s conventional diets with organic foods for five consecutive days. The children were then given their normal foods and monitored for an additional seven days.

“Immediately after substituting organic food items for the children’s normal diets, the concentration of the organophosphorus pesticides found in their bodies decreased substantially to non-detectable levels until the conventional diets were re-introduced,” said Dr. Lu.

During the days when children consumed organic diets, most of their urine samples contained zero concentration of the malathion metabolite. However, once the children returned to their conventional diets, the average malathion metabolite concentration increased to 1.6 parts per billion with a concentration range from 5 to 263 parts per billion. A similar trend was seen for chlorpyrifos. The average chlorpyrifos metabolite concentration increased from one part per billion during the organic diet days to six parts per billion when children consumed conventional food.

A second study, published in the February 2006 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, confirmed these results. Once again, another group of 23 children from the Seattle area aged 3-11 years participated. When the conventionally grown foods in their diets were replaced with comparable organically grown foods, concentrations of compounds in the children’s urine indicating exposure to organophosphate pesticides immediately dropped to non-detectable levels and remained non-detectable until they once again consumed conventionally grown foods.

The children were first monitored for three days on their normal diet. Then, most of the conventionally grown items in their diets were replaced with comparable organically grown items for 5 days. Substituted items included fruits and vegetables, juices, processed fruit and vegetable products and wheat or corn based products. Lastly, the children returned to their normal diets for a further 7 days.

Researchers analyzed two spot daily urine samples, first-morning and before-bedtime voids, throughout the 15-day study period. Urinary concentrations of compounds indicating the children were ingesting the organophosphorus pesticides, malathion and chlorpyrifos, became undetectable immediately after the introduction of organic diets and remained undetectable until the conventional diets were reintroduced.’ Emory University Health Sciences Center

The repetition of this research clearly demonstrates that an organic diet provides a dramatic and immediate protective effect against exposures to organophosphorus pesticides, which are commonly used in agricultural production. Organophosphate pesticides account for approximately half the insecticide use in the U.S. and are applied to many conventionally grown foods important in children’s diets.

Organophosphates work by poisoning the nervous system in pests.

Pesticides effects on humans are damage to the nervous system, reproductive system and other organs, developmental and behavioral abnormalities, disruption of hormone function as well as immune dysfunction.

Benefits of Wheatgrass

Source: http://www.hippocratesinst.org/natural-health-resources/benefits-of-wheatgrass

WHEATGRASS JUICE…

Increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris. Wheatgrass also stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body.

Stimulates the thyroid gland, correcting obesity, indigestion, and a host of other complaints.

Restores alkalinity to the blood. The juice’s abundance of alkaline minerals helps reduce over-acidity in the blood. It can be used to relieve many internal pains, and has been used successfully to treat peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, diarrhea, and other complaints of the gastrointestinal tract.

Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector. The enzymes and amino acids found in wheatgrass can protect us from carcinogens like no other food or medicine. It strengthens our cells, detoxifies the liver and bloodstream, and chemically neutralizes environmental pollutants.

Fights tumors and neutralizes toxins. Recent studies show that wheatgrass juice has a powerful ability to fight tumors without the usual toxicity of drugs that also inhibit cell-destroying agents. The many active compounds found in grass juice cleanse the blood and neutralize and digest toxins in our cells.

Contains beneficial enzymes. Whether you have a cut finger you want to heal or you desire to lose five pounds…enzymes must do the actual work. The life and abilities of the enzymes found naturally in our bodies can be extended if we help them from the outside by adding exogenous enzymes, like the ones found in wheatgrass juice. Don’t cook it. We can only get the benefits of the many enzymes found in grass by eating it uncooked. Cooking destroys 100 percent of the enzymes in food.

Has remarkable similarity to our own blood. The second important nutritional aspect of chlorophyll is its remarkable similarity to hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in the blood. Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, president of the Hagiwara Institute of Health in Japan, is a leading advocate for the use of grass as food and medicine. He reasons that since chlorophyll is soluble in fat particles, and fat particles are absorbed directly into the blood via the lymphatic system, that chlorophyll can also be absorbed in this way. In other words, when the “blood” of plants is absorbed in humans it is transformed into human blood, which transports nutrients to every cell of the body.

When used as a rectal implant, reverses damage from inside the lower bowel. An implant is a small amount of juice held in the lower bowel for about 20 minutes. In the case of illness, wheatgrass implants stimulate a rapid cleansing of the lower bowel and draw out accumulations of debris.

Externally applied to the skin can help eliminate itching almost immediately.

Will soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant. Rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, it will help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly, scalp conditions.

Is soothing and healing for cuts, burns, scrapes, rashes, poison ivy, athlete’s foot, insect bites, boils, sores, open ulcers, tumors, and so on. Use as a poultice and replace every two to four hours.

Works as a sleep aide. Merely place a tray of living wheatgrass near the head of your bed. It will enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help you sleep more soundly.

Enhances your bath. Add some to your bath water and settle in for a nice, long soak.

Sweetens the breath and firms up and tightens gums. Just gargle with the juice.

Neutralizes toxic substances like cadmium, nicotine, strontium, mercury, and polyvinyl chloride.

Offers the benefits of a liquid oxygen transfusion since the juice contains liquid oxygen. Oxygen is vital to many body processes: it stimulates digestion (the oxidation of food), promotes clearer thinking (the brain utilizes 25% of the body’s oxygen supply), and protects the blood against anaerobic bacteria. Cancer cells cannot exist in the presence of oxygen.

Turns gray hair to its natural color again and greatly increases energy levels when consumed daily.

Is a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process when the juice is consumed. Wheatgrass will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process way down, making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.

Lessens the effects of radiation. One enzyme found in wheatgrass, SOD, lessens the effects of radiation and acts as an anti-inflammatory compound that may prevent cellular damage following heart attacks or exposure to irritants.

Restores fertility and promotes youthfulness.

Can double your red blood cell count just by soaking in it. Renowned nutritionist Dr. Bernard Jensen found that no other blood builders are superior to green juices and wheatgrass. In his book Health Magic Through Chlorophyll from Living Plant Life he mentions several cases where he was able to double the red blood cell count in a matter of days merely by having patients soak in a chlorophyll-water bath. Blood building results occur even more rapidly when patients drink green juices and wheatgrass regularly.

Our Lyme Disease Journey

By Kim Martindale, September 20, 2012

It’s the summer of 2012 and we’ve had no winter this year.  The bugs are out in full force, including those horrible little ticks that carry so many infections.  Our journey into Lyme started one hot day at camp Menagerie.  Menagerie is a suburban farm and wildlife sanctuary located in Collierville, TN. just ten minutes from our house.

All day long, for five days straight, the girls rode horses, walked trails, picked fruits and vegetables, pet baby possums and deer, swam in a lake and went fishing.  They loved camp!!
On the last day of camp, after it was all over, Lauren came to me because something was stuck on her head.  It was an engorged tick feeding just above her right ear.

I took some tweezers and worked for quite some time trying to remove it. I checked online for instructions and tried my best to follow those.  At the bottom of the instructions a warning phrase caught my eye. If you get sick within 2-4 weeks after the tick bite, see a doctor. The symptoms to look for;  fever, muscle soreness, numbness in feet or hands, joint pain, and extreme fatigue.

A couple of weeks after camp Lauren came down with a really bad cough, sinus infection, sore throat and fever.  She was sick on and off with these symptoms for 5 weeks.  However, she was able to go to school because the fever subsided quickly.  About 3 weeks after her tick bite Lauren was running with her class in PE and the muscles in her legs just gave out. That same day she fell off the bars at school.  The next day her feet started to hurt and she complained that they were numb and tingly.

At that point I remembered the warning and decided to take her to our naturopathic doctor.  His specialty is infectious diseases and he helps many people with tick born infections. He told me to keep the tick next time so he could test it.

John Smothers tested Lauren in his office and encouraged me to get her blood tested for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme Disease).  She was positive on his test.  He told me to make sure my pediatrician singed off on the Western Blot lab test from IGenex Laboratory in California.  It’s the gold standard for Lyme Disease.  The IGenex test only has 2% false positive rate and a 25% false negative rate. The most common screening test that doctors use here is the Elisa Test.  It is very unreliable. Over 75% of patients with chronic Lyme disease are negative by ELISA, while positive by Western blot.

I took Lauren and my IGenex test kit to my local pediatrician and she was willing to sign off on it for insurance purposes but she explained that according to the CDC there is no Lyme Disease in Tennessee and if Lauren was positive she could not treat her.

Thankfully, Lauren was already being treated.  John Smothers immediately put her on antimicrobial herbs (natural antibiotics) specifically for Lyme Disease.  Lauren’s test results showed that she was positive on three bands of her Lyme Test which qualified her for treatment according to CDC guidelines.  She had acquired Lyme Disease and thankfully, we  caught it early.

Lauren frequently has pain in her body but it usually comes in short bursts.  One night, she came in our room gasping and crying at midnight because she was having trouble breathing.  She had sharp pain shooting through her lungs and heart.  It finally subsided after a few hours.  On two separate occasions she had asthma attacks (she’s never had asthma).  One week she experienced three incidences of sharp pain in her abdomen accompanied by nausea which also came for a few hours and then disappeared.  Sometimes her leg muscles and feet hurt.   She often has a sore throat and her persistent cough is still hanging on.  A few days ago her neck was so sore, stiff and painful she could hardly move her head.  She also has trouble sleeping.

Meanwhile, Grace, my chronically ill child who has suffered with asthma, eczema, sensory issues, speech delays, heavy metal load (mercury, lead, aluminum, nickel), leaky gut, food allergies, parasites, candida and yeast infections had started having chronic, painful headaches, anxiety and memory/concentration issues beyond what she had exhibited before.  I decided to have her tested too since they were likely exposed to the same ticks.

I also took her to our doctor and he tested her for tick born infections in his office.  She tested positive for Babesia, a Lyme co-infection.  We also had her blood tested for Lyme disease.  Her test came back positive but unlike Lauren, her test showed a long-term exposure to the infection.

Could it by that Lyme Disease is one of underlying causes for all her other immune problems?  We know that Lyme disease can effect any system in the body at any time and crosses the blood brain barrier.  It hides from antibiotics and can wreak havoc on the immune system.  Lyme mimics many other common diseases and is the underlying cause in some cases of MS, Chronic Fatigue, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Lupus, Parkinsons, IBS, Dementia, ADD, Autism, Restless Legs, Arthritis,  Anxiety, Crohn’s Disease, GERD, Fibromyalgia, Allergic Conditions, Anxiety, Insomnia, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, etc…(Click here for a complete list).

John Smothers immediately started Grace on Lyme treatment.  She is responding well so far.  In fact, the number of symptoms for both girls has decreased in frequency.  Grace’s teacher commented during our parent-teacher conference that Grace’s memory, anxiety and concentration had improved dramatically in the past few weeks.  Even her eczema is responding beautifully to the treatment (it’s gone for now)!

Treating the girls naturally involves so much more than just herbal antibiotics.  Foods that feed bacteria and parasites are off limits (wheat, dairy, sugar, corn, & processed foods).  They must eat well to build a strong immune system for this fight.  Mitigating their exposure to electromagnetic fields, mold, dust, and other allergens is also important. Along with herbal antimicrobials, they take supplements which include magnesium, iodine, fish oil, garlic, gingko, coconut oil, curcumin and probiotics.

Good quality sleep is also an important piece of the healing puzzle.  Thankfully a year of detoxing Grace, healing her gut and building her immune system has had an enormous positive impact on her health and will enhance the effectiveness of her Lyme treatment.  Sleeping grounded is also contributing to the healing process. Grace always lies down on her grounding sheets and finds relief when she’s wheezing, has headaches or feels bad.  Lauren’s sheets arrived today and I’m hoping that they will help regulate her sleep and reduce inflammation and pain in her body.

I’ve started a daily health journal where I record symptoms and successes for both girls every day.  It’s very helpful to look back and see improvements or realize that more treatment is needed or needs tweaking.

I’ve also put together a LYME Disease page on my blog where I’m gathering links to helpful websites, blogs, books, films, videos and articles.  You can visit it at: LYME DISEASE

Working in John Smother’s office I’ve met many people coming in for treatment for Lyme Disease.  Most of them have been debilitated by Lyme, even after years of antibiotic treatment.  Natural therapies give them relief from their symptoms.  I’m encouraged about the route that we are taking in part because of them.

I recently read, “Cure, Unknown, Inside the Lyme Epidemic” and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking answers about Lyme. I’ve also purchased, “Recipes for Repair: A Lyme Disease Cookbook”, for ideas on how to support healing through nutrition.

We are just beginning this journey.  I have no idea where Lyme will take us but I am hopeful. I’ve had moments full of fear and anxiety and I’ve needed to weep and unload this burden.  Thankfully, I have a God who can carry it all and He’s carrying me to.  I have felt His presence and his love every step of the way.   He has given me these verses today…

“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:7

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”  Isaiah 26:3

One beautiful outcome of all of this has been watching Lauren grow close to God.  Every night now she reads her Bible and writes prayers, poems and praise songs to God.  She has a new radiance and sweetness about her that is inspiring.

This is the promise that I hold on to for my daughters.

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”  Romans 8:28

How to Treat Lyme Disease with Herbs

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterial infection that was received as a result of an infected tick. Lyme disease causes muscle aches and pains, skin rash (in the shape of a bulls-eye), headache, fever, excessive tiredness, sore throat, stiff neck, and possible sinus infection. Lyme disease is often treated with antibiotics, however herbs are becoming more and more popular to treat Lyme disease. Herbs are natural and extremely beneficial to the body. Herbs also have no side effects.

  1. Begin drinking Aloe Vera Juice. Herbs are used to treat many of the symptoms of Lyme Disease and to boast the bodies immune system. Not all symptoms are the same so some patients may not need all of the herbs listed. They all will, however, need the Aloe Vera Juice. Aloe Vera Juice can detoxify your body which is extremely important to begin healing. It is also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.
  2. Take herbs that boost your immune system. Boosting your immune system will give your body the power it needs to fight infections on its own the way it was created to. The three top herbs for this purpose are Cat’s Claw, Siberian Ginseng, and Echinacea. You can get any of these products at your local health store or from a GNC store or website.
  3. Stop the growth of the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. There are 3 herbs that are known for doing this and they should be added to your diet. They are your average garlic (sold in supermarkets), Licorice (you won’t mind eating this) and skullcap. These are thought to be especially effective against the specific bacteria that causes Lyme Disease.
  4. Treat any abnormal brain functions by taking Gingko biloba. This is not always a symptom so some Lyme Disease patients may not even need this. If you are having trouble with concentration, memory, or any trouble with your thought processes than add Gingko biloba to your diet.
  5. Treat fatigue. You can do this by using foods rich in Omega-3 (or buy a bottle of it at your local health food store) and by adding flaxseed oil to your herbal regiment. Treating fatigue with caffeine, which is what is normally done, is not a solution. Caffeine has a natural high, but then causes a crash.
  6. Treat muscle pain. You can do this with a product called Sam-e or with Amino acid supplements containing creatine. Muscle soreness is a symptom that most Lyme Disease patients have so this is a treatment that almost every patient will want to work in to their regiment. Why live in pain if there are natural products that can help you feel better.
  7. Treat inflammation. Grapeseed extract is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. White willow bark works the same way aspirin does in that it relieves pain and reduces inflammation. It is safer than aspirin, however, as it does not cause bleeding as reported by Dr. James A. Duke, Ph.D. Almost all Lyme Disease patients suffer from inflammation and should consider one of these two herbs.
  8. Treat headaches and facial tensions with kudzu extracts. This herb may also help with stiff necks that are common among patients with Lyme Disease. If you find that your headaches are more like migraines than you may want to take supplements containing feverfew instead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make an appointment to talk with an herbalist who can give you more tips on treating the symptoms of Lyme Disease. There are other things besides herbs that work they an herbalist might know about. One example is raising your body temperature twice per day. This can be done by using a hot tub or sauna. It has a high success rate.
  • Consult your doctor before beginning any herbal regiment. Some herbs interact with prescription drugs so they need to be discussed with a licensed physician.

Lyme Disease: Managing the Epidemic of Our Time

Read the Original Article – http://wisdom-magazine.com/Article.aspx/2738/
by Katina I. Makris, CCH, CIH

Historical trends in the USA show that a massive infectious disease epidemic, with life altering repercussions, has surfaced every few decades. Over the past 150 years we have weathered malaria, yellow fever, small pox, tuberculosis, diphtheria, polio and HIV. An initial outbreak surfaces with a rapid bloom, surging across the populace. Traditionally, science has lingered ‘behind the curve’ at the onset and hundreds of thousands succumb or are maimed by the infectious agent. Fear, suffering and despair run rampant. Fortunately an effective treatment or preventative measure (i.e. vaccine) for the illness has hastily been discovered. The pandemic quells, and fear subsides and life returns to normal. Guess what? We are in the ‘behind the curve’ phase with the current epidemic of our era – Lyme disease.

The USA is currently in the throes of a swiftly moving Lyme disease epidemic. Hundreds of cases are contracted daily, and the tick population, the primary insect carrier, is multiplying in proportions beyond historically normal. A realistic anxiety over potential infection is rising, nationwide. Climate changes over the past decade have yielded milder temperatures in the USA’s higher latitudes, enabling ticks to now ‘winter over’ in northern New England, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada and mountainous elevations of the Alleghenies, Sierras, Cascades, Rocky Mountains. Multiple week stretches of minus 20 degrees are now rare, not killing the ticks off as in the past. Additionally, migratory bird patterns have introduced Lyme disease to southern regions such as Florida, Texas, California, even as far distant as Uruguay and Scandinavia. Lyme disease is found in eighty nine countries of the world.

Lyme disease, transmitted by a bite from a tick, is a bacterial infection caused by an organism know as borrelia burgdorferi. There are also variant tick-borne co-infections caused by parasites, bacteria and micoplasmas, manifesting minor yet detectable symptoms. Borrelia, the primary, is a spirochete or corkscrew bacteria, which is in the same family as syphilis, yet is considered to be stronger and more virulent. Like syphilis, Lyme initially starts out with seemingly mild symptomatology, but over time, if untreated, it can cause devastating effects to the central nervous system, heart, kidneys, skeletal and immune system with sometimes permanent repercussions.

The borrelia bacteria replicates in the bloodstream every six weeks, entrenching itself deeply within the host, causing hide-and-seek outbreaks of symptoms and remission, akin to malaria, confounding patients and practitioners not savvy about Lyme. Early infections can be addressed with aggressive antibiotic treatment.

Many medical professionals, depending on their locale, are not familiar with either acute Lyme disease symptoms nor are they educated about the more complex and serious chronic forms of this illness, as the CDC has yet to recognize the chronic form of Lyme, nor promote CLD guidelines for medical professionals. The CDC by their own admission estimates 300,000 cases of Lyme are contracted in the USA annually and a mere 10% are properly diagnosed, leaving over 250,000 annually with misdiagnoses, such as fibromyalgia, Lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, MS, migraines, learning disabilities, bi-polar disorders, Parkinson’s, heart arrhythmia’s and more, when the Lyme organism is the true culprit. Reasoning suggests well over 2,000,000 people in the USA are afflicted with the chronic form of Lyme. Immediate attention, funding, research and education are vital to address the misunderstandings and ravages of this exploding epidemic, which has surpassed HIV in its growth rate, as the number one infectious illness in the USA.

The USA eastern seaboard, Ohio River valley, northern California and the Pacific northwest are under fierce assault. Individuals and pets come into proximity with this insect. The best first step is PREVENTION. Below are some salient points to heed.

Be aware of environments ticks inhabit, even when vacationing, so you don’t wander blithely into Lyme disease territory unprepared, this includes: grassy meadows, beach dune grass, forests, hiking trails, shrubbery abutting forests, thick vegetation of golf courses, grasses of marshlands and empty building lots. Spring and autumn are ‘hatch out’ times for new ticks. After a rain their numbers can be higher, too. Be alert.

When hiking, fishing, camping, golfing, even gardening wear long sleeves on your limbs when possible, as well as a hat. Tuck your pant legs into your socks. Tuck long hair under your hat. Wear light colored clothing, as it is easier to spot a tick. Spray your clothing with a tick repellant. The best repellant ingredient is called permethrin (a chemical derivative from chrysanthemum). However, it should not touch the skin. DEET is a moderate tick repellant. The essential oil, rose geranium, lemon balm and eucalyptus are natural offerings.

When returning indoors, remove all clothing, and dry on HOT heat in the dryer for fifteen minutes. High temps can kill the ticks (hence not often found in dry deserts). But, hot water washing will not do the trick. Scan your entire body, smoothing your hands over every part, searching for any ticks. They gravitate to warm, soft areas such as armpits, groin, nape of neck or the hair. If you live in a Lyme dense area, teach your children to do nightly tick checks, just as you brush your teeth, including feeling through the hair. This extra nightly measure can be critical in ‘catching’ an early infection.

Have your pets vaccinated with the ‘Lyme vax’. It has been used successfully for over a decade with millions of animals. Pets can also be protected with a monthly repellant such as Frontline. Brush and examine your pets regularly for ticks. Wash and dry their bedding frequently on HOT. Avoid letting pets sleep in your bed, since ticks can crawl from them to you.

If a tick has embedded itself in your body, remove it with tweezers held as close to the skin as possible. Do not yank or twist the tick when extracting. Pull slowly off, so as not to detach the body, leaving the head lodged, this could lead to a local skin infection. The tiny deer tick is the most infected variety (up to 75% in certain ranges). They are pin head or freckle sized, seemingly innocuous to look at, yet larger when engorged with blood. The bigger dog and wood ticks are culprits too. If you extract a deer tick, let your GP know, and watch for symptoms over the ensuing two weeks.

Early symptoms include a varying constellation of: headaches, stiff neck, chills, mild fever, clammy or sweaty sleep, fatigue, muscle/flu like aches, joint pain, back or hip aches, ‘stretch marks’ on the back, dizziness, Bell’s palsy, anxiety, heart palpitations, sore soles, weakness and 50% of the cases show a reddish ‘bulls eye’ rash. Get to a physician immediately!

A word of extra caution involves lab testing for Lyme disease. The standard lab test most local and regional facilities run for Lyme disease has over a 60% error rate. They are very inaccurate, giving many false negatives, leaving people sick when they need treatment. A LLMD (Lyme literate) physician will use one of the three USA Lyme specialty labs, with more attuned testing. These newer labs and tests are helping to turn thousands of lives around.

This illness can be decimating when not treated early. It can reek havoc, leaving individuals and families in various states of physical, emotional, financial collapse and despair. This is the epidemic of our era asking us to unite the two hands of health care – the diagnostic and pharmaceutical weaponry of conventional medicine, with the restorative support of natural medicine. A multiplex approach of pharmaceuticals, nutritive supplements, and herbal medicine brings the most positive outcome in chronic cases urging us to renovate our healthcare paradigm.

All forces must align now to amend the casualties of this misrepresented epidemic. The hope is that well funded, focused scientific research could arrest the epidemic and in turn ‘unlock’ the link to many illnesses, such as MS and rheumatoid arthritis, as being caused by the various organisms of Lyme disease. More real cures could potentially follow.

If your doctor feels ‘relaxed’ or uninformed about the seriousness of Lyme, find another one. Please pay attention and take care of yourself and loved ones. This illness should not be glossed over. Nationwide Lyme disease support groups and associations can be of assistance. See lymenet.org or lymedisease.org.

Coconut Oil – What you need to know about this amazing rejuvenation and healing oil

Source-NaturalNews http://www.naturalnews.com/036156_Coconut_oil_superfood_healing.html#ixzz24cBxOfOK

Coconut oil is a popular nutritional oil derived from the meat of matured coconuts. Coconut has long been a primary source of food throughout the tropics. Its various industrial and cosmetic applications have made it a very viable commodity. Coconut oil is heat stable, making it suitable for cooking at high temperatures. It is slow to oxidize, resists rancidity and has a shelf life of approximately two years or more; virgin coco creme created through a wet-milling process has an indefinite shelf life.

The composition of coconut oil

The coconut possesses a wide variety of health benefits due to its fiber and nutritional content, but it is the oil that makes it a remarkable source of food and medicine. It has definitely earned its reputation as the healthiest oil in the world despite the fact that its high saturated fat content was once falsely claimed to be unhealthy.

What makes coconut oil different?

Oils and fats are composed of molecules known as fatty acids. They are classified either according to saturation or based on molecular length and size of the carbon chain within each fatty acid. Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are an example of the first class.

The second classification is based on molecular size or length of the fatty acid’s carbon chain. Long chains of carbon atoms consist of each fatty acid with an attached hydrogen atom. There are short chain fatty acids known as SCFA, medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) such as coconut oil and long chain fatty acids (LCFA). Whether unsaturated or saturated, the majority of fats and oils in our diet are composed of long chain fatty acids. In fact, a majority of the fatty acids commonly consumed are LCFA.

Coconut oil is predominantly medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) and the effects of the MCFA in coconut oil are distinctly different from the LCFA found in other foods. In fact, the saturated and unsaturated fat in milk, eggs, meat and even in plants and most vegetable oils are made of LCFA. Why is this relevant? It is important because our bodies respond and metabolize each fatty acid differently. It is the MCFA found in coconut oil that makes it special because these fatty acids do not have a negative effect on cholesterol. In fact, they are known to lower the risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis. There are only few dietary sources of MCFA, and one of the best sources by far is coconut oil.

Theliver and gall bladder do not need to digest and emulsify MCFA, resulting in instant energy, increased metabolic rate and subsequently more heat production as well as increased circulation. Anyone with an impaired fat digestion or removed gallbladder will benefit from coconut oil as this oil is easily digested. (http://www.naturalnews.com/022313_fat_oil_coconut.html)

Lauric Acid

Coconut oil has many health benefits which are attributed to the presence of lauric acid. When it is present in the body, lauric acid is converted into monolaurin, a compound that is highly toxic to viruses, bacteria, funguses and other microorganisms because of its ability to disrupt their lipid membranes and virtually destroy them.

Monolaurin is effective for treating candida albicans, fungal infections and athlete’s foot. It also targets bacterial infections and viruses like measles, influenza, hepatitis C and even HIV. In fact, researchers from the Philippines are studying the effectiveness of lauric acid against HIV/AIDS due to its strong anti-viral properties. Moreover, lauric acid is non-toxic, making it a better alternative to modern drugs that are typically prescribed for viruses as well as fungal and bacterial infections.

Without lauric acid, monolaurin cannot be produced by the body. Breast milk is the only other source of lauric acid, which must explain the lesser incidents of infections with breast-fed infants. It has also been observed that regular consumption of coconut oil boosts immunity and reduces incidences of sickness.

The health benefits of coconut oil

Hair care – The unique fatty acids in coconut oil have a small molecular structure and pass freely into the hair’s cell membrane, allowing for the oil to penetrate the hair’s shaft; this literally brings out the deep conditioning from within compared to other conditioners that work from the outside in.

Massaging the oil into the scalp can offer relief from dandruff. Dandruff is caused by dry skin or an internal fungal condition that reached the scalp. With regular use, coconut oil can kill the fungus and eliminate dandruff issues. For deep hair conditioning, a teaspoon or two on damp hair left for as long as possible can give an ultra-nice shine. Leave it on overnight and see startling results. (http://www.naturalnews.com/029120_coconut_oil_hair_conditioner.html)

Skin care – Coconut oil is an excellent skin conditioner containing medium-chain triglycerides, naturally occurring fats which deeply penetrate, moisturize and acts as a protective barrier against environmental and free radical damage. The oil also provides sun protection by screening 20 percent of ultraviolet exposure.

Coconut oil is rich in anti-oxidants and bursting with the natural microbial and antibacterial agents caphrylic and capric acids. . Its ability to smooth the skin while infusing with anti-oxidants makes it a perfect anti-aging moisturizer. Moreover, it contains vitamin E, another antioxidant popular for hastening the recovery of skin abrasions, burns and other trauma. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Weight loss – Medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil can speed up metabolism faster than long-chain fatty acids because they are easily digested and converted into energy. In fact, a study reported medium-chain fatty acids to be three times more effective in raising metabolism than long-chain fatty acids, leading researchers to conclude that effective weight loss can be achieved by replacing long-chain fatty acids with medium- chain fatty acids. (http://www.naturalnews.com/026808_oil_coconut.html)

Natural remedy for pneumonia – In a study presented before The American College of Chest Physicians on October 29, 2008, coconut oil was found to offer pneumonia patients faster and more complete relief from symptoms. This could be a welcome development for many as this means a reduced stay in the hospital, lower medical expenses and lower exposure for the patient to a hospital environment. Moreover, it is an inexpensive addition to traditional antibiotics and has no known side effects. (http://www.naturalnews.com/025038_coconut_child_oil.html)

Lowers risk of diabetes, heart disease and improves cholesterol levels – In a study made on women subjects ranging from 20 to 40 years old, half of the subjects were instructed to take a 30 ml soybean oil supplement while the other half were instructed to take a 30ml coconut oil supplement while maintaining moderate exercise routine over a 12-week period. Results of the study showed that although both group of women had a decrease in body mass index (BMI), only the women who were taking coconut oil showed a notable decease in waist circumference significantly lowering the risk of conditions like type II diabetes and heart disease.

Furthermore, the study also showed that the subjects who experienced an improvement in their cholesterol profile along with higher HDL levels and higher HDL: LDL ratio were the ones taking coconut oil. Those taking soybean oil did not receive the same benefits but reflected a higher total cholesterol as well as higher LDL cholesterol lower, lower HDL cholesterol and a lower HDL: LDL ratio. (http://www.naturalnews.com/026547_oil_coconut.html)

Assists in bone health and chronic fatigue – Research has found coconut oil to help prevent osteoporosis because it helps in the nutrient absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium – important minerals that fight osteoporosis.

Moreover, the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil produce energy rather than body fat, thereby improving metabolism and preventing fatigue. The oil has also been shown to destroy organisms in the body that sap its strength and contribute to the condition of fatigue. (http://www.naturalnews.com/033718_food_miracles.html)

Alzheimer’s Disease – Dr. Mary Newport, after failing to get treatment for her husband’s dementia, discovered that coconut oil contained natural medium-chain triglyceride (MCT). The same substance was used in a drug trial her husband failed to qualify for. So, she gave her husband 1 tbsp. of coconut oil twice a day for a month and a half and saw him almost completely recovered. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Others – aside from the health benefits mentioned earlier the following health benefits have been attributed to the beneficial use of coconut oil:

• Protects against cancer and HIV and other infectious diseases
• Kills bacteria and parasites like tape worm and liver flukes
• Eases acid reflux, aids in proper bowel function
• Lowers incidence of hemorrhoids
• Heals and relieves intestinal problems
• Soothes earaches
• Deals with symptoms connected with prostate enlargement
• Strengthens the liver and protects against degeneration
• Reduces incidence of epileptic seizures
• Reduces joint and muscle inflammation
• Eases neuropathies and itching from diabetes.

How much oil should be taken in to enjoy its benefits?

According to researchers, an adult should consume around 3 1/2 tbsp. of coconut oil daily: an amount equal to the MCFA a nursing infant would receive in one day. The benefits of coconut oil are derived from the nutritional value of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA’s), and the best comparison in nature as to the percentage of MCFA consumed in a diet is in human breast milk. For those who are not used to having coconut oil in their diet, it is best to start out with a lesser amount and see how the body reacts before following the recommended amount.

Does coconut oil have any adverse side effects?

Coconut oil has no known side effects. However, if you are used to a low-fat diet, a common adverse reaction would be diarrhea. It is probably not advisable to start with a large amount right away. Spreading the recommended amount over the course of one day and building up to a larger dose can help to avoid unwanted effects.

In coconut-producing countries, it is considered beneficial for pregnant and lactating women to enjoy coconut oil; Westerners used to a low-fat diet, however, are cautioned not to experiment with coconut oil while pregnant if the body is not used to it. If you have been consuming coconut oil regularly with no adverse reactions, there is no reason to discontinue consumption.

Kim’s Journal – What I’m doing to stay healthy in 2013

From time to time friends and acquaintances, who know that I’m into health and nutrition, ask me what I’m doing to stay healthy.  They want to know what I’m eating and what I’ve stopped eating and what products I use.  This post is my way of answering those questions while providing some resources that have helped me in this journey.

I am very passionate about health because I know the pain, fear and anxiety that often result from ill health and disease.  Sickness is like a thief that robs us of joy, energy, hope and financial resources. We can’t always avoid it but there are things we can do to prevent the chronic diseases that have become so commonplace in our world.

I have done a lot of investigation and study over the past few years in the field of nutrition and natural health.  The movies “Food, Inc.”, “Food Matters” and “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” inspired me to start educating myself about how to take control of my own health.  Of the many books I’ve read on nutrition, four stand out:  “Deep Nutrition”, “Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health”, “Health and Nutrition Secrets that Can Save you Life”, and “The Maker’s Diet”.   These books have provided the foundation for my current diet and healthy lifestyle.  Now I am working as an assistant for John Smothers, a clinical nutritionist in Memphis, where I’m continuing to learn new things every day.

Here’s a summary of the steps I’ve taken to improve my own health and well being.

What I’ve eliminated:  Industrial Food

  1. Hydrogenated oils and trans fats (Crisco, margarine, etc) from my diet.
  2. Processed Vegetable oils (canola, soybean, corn, etc..) .  For cooking I only use organic, pastured butter, ghee and coconut oil. I do use extra virgin olive oil, avocado and macadamia nut oil but not for cooking.  Other vegetable oils are toxic to the body.
  3. Artificial sweeteners.  Aspartame is a genetically modified food with dangerous side effects.  More and more is being discovered each day about how damaging this and other artificial sweeteners are to the body.  They are also implicated in weight gain.
  4. Processed Sugar.  Cancer cells thrive in the presence of sugar and it disrupts your body functions and impairs your immune system.  I use dextrose, maple syrup, coconut palm sugar and stevia instead.
  5. Foods and drinks made with high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup. No sodas!  They will damage the liver, are converted immediately to body fat, and increase LDL cholesterol.  I don’t drink store bought juice for the same reason.
  6. Grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats, rice). Foods that contain gluten can lead to everything from thyroid disorders, trouble losing weight, depression and other mental disorders, digestion diseases, malnourishment, and so much more.  Here are some good reasons to go grain free.
  7. MSG (in the majority of packaged foods) is a dangerous Neurotoxin that also causes weight gain.
  8. Soy products of any kind unless they are organic and fermented (miso, tempeh, natto).
  9. Conventional dairy products.  Occasionally I will drink raw, organic, grass-fed milk and I eat raw cheese. I also use organic pastured butter and ghee. Click here to learn more about dairy.
  10. Food or drinks in plastic, unless it is in my own BPA-free water bottle.  I never heat foods in plastic containers.  I don’t store food in plastic unless it’s BPA free.  Note: Ziploc bags and Gladware containers are BPA free.
  11. I avoid using a microwave oven.
  12. Teflon coated pots and pans.  Teflon is toxic.  I only use stainless steel, glass and hard anodized pots and pans for cooking.
  13. Aluminum Foil because it leeches into the food and aluminum is a toxic heavy metal.
  14. Canned foods. Unless labeled otherwise, cans are coated with toxic plastics that enter the food when the product is processed.  Acid foods like tomato sauce are the worst offenders.
  15. Alcoholic beverages.
  16. Caffeine because it keeps me up at night.
  17. Microwave popcorn because it has dangerous chemicals, preservatives, sodium and GMO corn.
  18. Farmed fish to avoid mercury, pcbs, and dioxins. Wild, Alaskan salmon is safe.
  19. Genetically modified foods (corn, potatoes, canola and soy products).  Organic produce is more nutritious due to the quality of the soil it is grown in.
  20. Pork (with the exception of organic, pastured bacon) and shellfish to avoid parasites, viruses, bacteria and toxins.
  21. Pesticide laden vegetables and fruits.  I use the dirty dozen list to choose clean produce. (http://www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php)
  22. I’ve eliminate almost all processed foods from my diet.
  23. Dental amalgam fillings because they contain mercury.
  24. Meat from animals raised in feed lots.  These animals are fed GMOs and injected with growth hormones, steroids and antibiotics.  They are miserable, sick and stressed.

What I Eat:  Real Food

  1. I eat mostly fresh or frozen organic vegetables.  I try to eat at least 50% of my vegetables raw in salads, smoothies or juices.
  2. I eat organic pastured meat (beef, turkey, chicken, bacon, salmon, sardines) and my free range backyard eggs (2-3 a day).  I try to eat 4 servings of protein and 4-6 tablespoons of healthy fats every day.
  3. I eat 1 or 2 servings of organic fruit every day.
  4. I eat raw nuts and seeds in moderation.  Brazil nuts, cashews, almonds, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts and others all have minerals and fats that are vital to helping the body function optimally.
  5. I eat Kerrygold cheese and butter and organic Greek yogurt.
  6. I also eat organic potatoes and sweet potatoes for carbohydrates.  I always eat plenty of fat or protein with my carbs to keep my insulin stable.
  7. I LOVE COCONUT OIL!!  I use it in almost everything.
  8. I eat lots of avocados.
  9. I frequently eat spinach salads with fruit, nuts, vegetables (dressed with olive oil and Himalayan salt) and salmon or whatever meat I have on hand.
  10. I use dextrose, coconut palm sugar and stevia to sweeten foods and beverages.  Coconut palm sugar or nectar is delicious, nutritious and has a low glycemic index.
  11. I love coconut ice cream and organic dark chocolate.
  12. I drink coconut milk and almond milk instead of cow’s milk.
  13. I drink 2 cups of green tea every day.
  14. I make bone broth every week to use in soups, stews and vegetables (instead of MSG/bullion cubes).  Bone broth is a delicious super food which is loaded with glycosaminoglycans, glycine, collagen, gelatin and minerals.
  15. I use a good quality juicer (Greenstar) and blender (Vitamix) to prepare my juices and smoothies.  I try to eat plenty of raw food every day.  I love to add flax seed, chia seed and hemp seed to my smoothies.
  16. I drink water from a reverse osmosis filter (to eliminate the fluoride, chlorine and other toxins in our municipal water supplies).  Fluoride contributes to many health problems in America, including thyroid disease, bone cancer, dental fluorosis and decreased IQ in children. Chlorine destroys the healthy fauna in our GI tract, weakening our immune system.
  17. I’ve switched to Celtic Sea Salt and Himalayan Salt.  There are many different minerals that can be found it sea salt that our bodies need.  Himalayan salt has over 80 essential minerals (table salt only has one, iodine).
  18. I eat prunes.  Prunes have been shown to help keep the calcium in our bones much better than calcium supplements.

Other changes that I have implemented

  1. I’ve switched to an all-natural deodorant (no aluminum). I’m also careful to buy bathing products, sunscreens, lotions and makeup that do not contain toxic substances.  Many are endocrine or brain chemistry disruptors.  (google “toxic cosmetic” to see lists of ingredients to avoid.)
  2. I use natural cleaning products and avoid bleach.
  3. I’ve switched our entire family to a non-fluoride toothpaste.  The fluoride we consume contributes to our out-of-whack thyroids and can make us gain weight and make it more difficult to lose weight.
  4. I exercise regularly.
  5. I try to get some sun every day. 15-20 minutes in the summer without sunscreen (before skin turns pink) for optimal vitamin D levels and also to improve and maintain good vision.
  6. I try to get at least 8 hours of quality sleep per night in complete darkness between the hours of 10:00 and 6:00 AM.
  7. I’ve done everything I can do to decrease exposure to electromagnetic frequencies in my bedroom (no alarm clock, CFL light bulbs or cordless phones by my bed. I sleep on a grounding pad and use a Qlink nimbus to bring harmony to the chaotic EMF fields in our house and bedroom).  We even moved our bed away from the power box outside my window.
  8. I NEVER get the flu shot – I refuse to knowingly put aluminum, formaldehyde and mercury in my body.  Instead I maintain a strong immune system through diet, stress management, exercise and supplements. (http://www.flu-treatments.com/flu-shot-ingredients.html)
  9. I spend time in prayer and meditation every day.
  10. I stay connected with friends.
  11. I exercise every day.  I love yoga, walking, plank work and plyometrics.
  12. I maintain boundaries and plenty of white space in my life to prevent and alleviate stress.
  13. I find ways to give back.  Sharing what I’ve learned about health and nutrition as well as my faith is meaningful and fulfilling for me.  I also find great fulfillment in being an active, thoroughly engaged mother and wife.

* I use these guidelines at home but when I’m eating at someone’s house I eat whatever is served 🙂

I do take supplements

  1. Vitamin D3 – 1000 IUs in the summer and 5000 IUs in the winter.
  2. Krill/Fish oil – essential fatty acids and astaxanthin for brain health.
  3. One good quality, whole food probiotic daily to build healthy flora/fauna and immunity.  I also eat sauerkraut, coconut kefir and kimchi which are loaded with probiotics.
  4. On occasion I take a whole food multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.  Synthetic vitamins are not easily absorbed by the body.
  5. Magnesium with Vitamin B6 and Folate
  6. Digestive Enzymes
  7. Melatonin for sleep (also a powerful antioxidant).
  8. Garlic, coconut oil, manuka honey and apple cider vinegar – to stave off bacteria and viruses.
  9. Gingko Biloba for memory enhancement, improved vision and blood circulation.

Vaccine bombshell: Baby monkeys given standard doses of popular vaccines develop autism symptoms

Sunday, May 06, 2012 by: Ethan A. Huff
Source: http://www.naturalnews.com/035787_vaccines_autism_monkeys.html#ixzz1vVcheq71

(NaturalNews) If vaccines play absolutely no role in the development of childhood autism, a claim made by many medical authorities today, then why are some of the most popular vaccines commonly administered to children demonstrably causing autism in animal primates? This is the question many people are now asking after a recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh (UP) in Pennsylvania revealed that many of the infant monkeys given standard doses of childhood vaccines as part of the new research developed autism symptoms.

For their analysis, Laura Hewitson and her colleagues at UP conducted the type of proper safety research on typical childhood vaccination schedules that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should have conducted — but never has — for such regimens. And what this brave team discovered was groundbreaking, as it completely deconstructs the mainstream myth that vaccines are safe and pose no risk of autism.

Presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in London, England, the findings revealed that young macaque monkeys given the typical CDC-recommended vaccination schedule from the 1990s, and in appropriate doses for the monkeys’ sizes and ages, tended to develop autism symptoms. Their unvaccinated counterparts, on the other hand, developed no such symptoms, which points to a strong connection between vaccines and autism spectrum disorders.

Included in the mix were several vaccines containing the toxic additive Thimerosal, a mercury-based compound that has been phased out of some vaccines, but is still present in batch-size influenza vaccines and a few others. Also administered was the controversial measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which has been linked time and time again to causing autism and various other serious, and often irreversible, health problems in children (http://www.greenhealthwatch.com)

“This research underscores the critical need for more investigation into immunizations, mercury, and the alterations seen in autistic children,” said Lyn Redwood, director of SafeMinds, a public safety group working to expose the truth about vaccines and autism. “SafeMinds calls for large scale, unbiased studies that look at autism medical conditions and the effects of vaccines given as a regimen.”

Vaccine oversight needs to be taken from CDC and given to independent agency, says vaccine safety advocate

Adding to the sentiment, Theresa Wrangham, president of SafeMinds called out the CDC for failing to require proper safety studies of its recommended vaccination schedules. Unlike all other drugs, which must at least undergo a basic round of safety testing prior to approval and recommendation, vaccinations and vaccine schedules in particular do not have to be proven safe or effective before hitting the market.

“The full implications of this primate study await publication of the research in a scientific journal,” said Wrangham. “But we can say that it demonstrates how the CDC evaded their responsibility to investigate vaccine safety questions. Vaccine safety oversight should be removed from the CDC and given to an independent agency.”
